How does a turbidity meter measure water quality?

by:BOQU     2021-06-06

A turbidity meter is an instrument for measuring water quality. A turbidity is a unit used to indicate the degree of water pollution. Turbidity is a measure of the decrease in the transparency of a liquid due to the presence of insoluble substances.

Turbidity is measured by an instrument called a turbidity meter. The turbidimeter emits light through a section of the sample and detects how much light is scattered by the particles in the water from a direction of 90° to the incident light. This method of measuring scattered light is called the scattering method. Any true turbidity must be measured in this way. The turbidity meter is not only suitable for outdoor and laboratory measurement, but also for continuous monitoring all-weather. The turbidity meter can be set to give an alarm when the measured turbidity value exceeds the safety standard.

The turbidity can also be estimated by measuring the attenuation of the transmitted light intensity caused by the obstructive effect of particulate matter in the sample using a colorimeter or spectrophotometer. However, the regulatory agency does not confess the effectiveness of this method, and this method does not meet the American Public Health Association's definition of turbidity.

The use of light transmittance measurement is simply affected by interference such as color absorption or particle absorption. Moreover, there is no correlation between the light transmittance and the results measured by the scattered light measurement method. Nevertheless, at some point, the measurement results of colorimeters and spectrophotometers can be used to measure large changes in turbidity in water treatment systems or process control. Turbidimeter is used to measure the degree of light scattering of insoluble particulate matter suspended in water or transparent liquid, and can quantitatively characterize the content of this suspended particulate matter. It can be widely used for turbidity measurement in power plants, purified water plants, water plants, domestic sewage treatment plants, beverage plants, environmental protection parts, industrial water, winemaking professions and pharmaceutical professions, epidemic prevention parts, hospitals, and other parts.
