Boiler feedwater for steam turbine systems should contain only trace amounts of oxygen, as excessive oxygen concentrations can cause corrosion damage to boiler steam cycle components. Oxygen in high pressure boiler feed water can attack the metal structure of the boiler, causing severe pitting corrosion. Additionally, iron oxides from corrosion can leave iron deposits that require additional system maintenance. To remove oxygen, boiler feed water is pretreated by thermal or chemical degassing to achieve oxygen-free water. This state must be maintained throughout the steam cycle. Degassing is accomplished through the use of physical media including degassing heaters or chemical media such as oxygen scavengers. The process of relying solely on periodic grab samples to monitor ppb oxygen concentrations in boiler feedwater carries the risk of significant sampling errors. This sampling error ultimately results in the use of additional costly water treatment consumables and more frequent boiler maintenance cycles, reducing boiler life. To prevent these problems, trace dissolved oxygen analyzers feature lead-silver, electroplating, dissolved oxygen sensors, and durable PFATeflon® membranes. This sensor is combined with an intelligent universal transmitter designed for continuous service. The sensor is housed in a rugged 316L flanged stainless steel body suitable for harsh industrial process environments. Oxygen diffused through the sensor membrane is reduced at the cathode to produce hydroxide ions, which react with lead ions in the electrolyte to form lead hydroxide. The cation dissolves more lead ions into the electrolyte, sending electrons to the yin to reduce any oxygen present. Current flows from lead yang to yin. Under constant conditions, the current is proportional to the oxygen concentration of the medium. A sensor is a smart digital device with a noise-free digital signal for easy communication. All data processing takes place inside the sensor and calibration information is stored in the sensor's internal memory. It also provides overall temperature measurement. The sensor features an easily replaceable electrical cartridge, eliminating the need for messy electrolyte/membrane replacement kits. It provides the user with a wide measurement range from 0.001 to 20.00 mg/l or ppm/ppb with automatic range. It operates over a process temperature range of –5°C to 50°C and a process pressure range of 0 to 15psi overpressure. Vacuum operation is not permitted. Highly stable over time, with continuum, drifting less than 1% per month. Sensors are compatible with universal transmitters. It is a single or dual channel transmitter designed for continuous measurement of pH, ORP, pION, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, conductivity or resistivity in general industrial environments. The transmitter communicates digitally with the sensor or any sensor, automatically configuring the transmitter's menu and display to the measured parameters.
