What is an Orp Meter and How Does it Work?

Let's begin with the basics. What is an Orp meter? ORP here stands for oxidation-reduction potential. ORP meter is a scientific device used to measure the ability of a solution to act as an oxidizing or a reducing agent. It measures the cleanliness of the water and its ability to break down contaminants. It is used in over 20 industries to treat water. It can provide detailed information about the water quality and the chemical reactions taking place in any solution.

What is ORP?

Oxidation-reduction potential is commonly abbreviated as ORP. It is a measure of a solution's ability to donate or accept electrons. It gauges the capacity of a substance to transfer electrons while a reaction is taking place. The electron transfer process is what drives oxidation reaction reactions.

ORP is measured in millivolts. It gives a quantitative measure of the solution's properties. A positive ORP value indicates that the solvents can be oxidized - having the ability to accept electrons. Conversely, a negative value shows a reducing potential.

How Does an ORP Meter Work?

ORP meter has a probe and a meter that reads the data. The probe is placed in the solutions where it comes in contact with the ions. It measures the potential difference between the two electrodes present in the probe. Here's a more detailed breakdown;


The Probe

The ORP probe contains two electrodes: a measuring electrode and a reference electrode. The first electrode is made of an inert metal like platinum or gold. It is highly conductive and sensitive to changes in the electron activity. The reference electrode is made of silver chloride or calomel. These two are a stable reference point to make a comparison.

Once the probe comes in contact with the solution, the measuring electrode interacts with the ions present in the solution. This interaction either causes a loss or gain of electrons. The electrical potential is produced which is measured by the meter.


ORP Measurement

As the solution reacts with the measuring electrode, an electrical potential difference is generated between the two electrodes. This potential difference is directly proportional to the ability of the solution to either oxidize or reduce items. The ORP tester captures this and displays it as a value of millivolts.

In simple words, the higher the ORP value, the more the oxidizing solution is. For example, clean water in a chlorinated pool will have a value of over 700 mV. If your ORP value is negative, the environment is reduced in nature, for example, in wastewater.


Calibration

For accurate readings of the ORP meter, calibration is required. It has to be done periodically to avoid any issues. This is done using a standard calibration solution, which is a buffer solution with a known ORP value. Once you get done with this, the meter is ready to provide precise measurements of all solutions.

In industries frequently dealing with chemical reactions, ORP measurement is vital. The ORP value gives information about the effectiveness of water treatment plans or the safety of drinking water. Here are a few of the applications of the ORP tester;

● Water Treatment: It is used to determine the effectiveness of disinfection processes. Operators use it to ensure that the disinfectant is working effectively and adjust themselves disinfectants for future use.

● Swimming Pools: To guarantee the water safety of the pools, measuring the ORP level is necessary. It is used alongside pH meters to certify water chemistry and sanitation.

● Aquaculture: In aquaculture, ORP meters help to maintain the quality of water in aquariums. A balanced ORP shows that fish and other organisms have a healthy environment. Poor levels indicate the buildup of toxins.

● Food and Beverage Industry: Used to control oxidation levels in numerous processes like brewing. It maintains the product quality and extended shelf life.

● Wastewater Treatment: ORP testers are used to inspect the stages of a treatment process. With it, operators adjust the chemicals to achieve the desired redox conditions for removing pollutants and breaking down organic matter.
